If you’re looking for cheap sun, sea and yummy food, look no further than Fuerteventura. From hiking, watersports, shopping, eating… There is really something for everyone. My posts about this magical island are definitely some that are most in demand by you guys, so I’m going to treat you to even more! To start up with, I thought that I would sum up all of the things you must do in Fuerteventura. 21 to be precise!
21 Things You Must do in Fuerteventura
- Eat Spanish Food – with the Spanish influence on the island, tapas is a must when in Fuerteventura. Some personal faves are Casa Marcos or El Morale for the traditional tapas. Both are in Villaverde, which has some of the best food on the island.
- Hike up a Mountain – there are so many mountains on the island that you’ll be spoiled for choice! A great one is the Hondo crater, which is perfect for beginners. You also could even hitch a ride on a friendly camel!
- Visit El Cotillo – my favourite village on the island! Whether you are looking for the best beach (La Concha) or some boho shops, this fishing village has you covered. There are also some fabulous festivals that take place here in the summer. Careful though, some of these don’t start until the middle of the night!
- Explore the Sand Dunes – Corralejo National Park is one of the things you must do in Fuerteventura. You can spend a while climbing up (and rolling down) these magical dunes. There are also some of the best beaches on the island just around the corner.
- Try Windsurfing – Fuerteventura is the home of this great sport. With choppy seas and a strong wind, you can have hours of fun playing on the sea. The best place for learning this is Jandia. You can also get to see some stunning scenery whilst you are there!
- Rent a Car – the public transport on the island is okay at best. I would whole-heartedly recommend renting a car so that you can explore the entire length of the island. Some of our best days have been road trips on this island, stopping for ice creams on the way!
- Climb the Caves of Ajuy – find lost pirate treasure in these hidden caves. The walk down may not be for the faint-hearted, but it is well worth it. If you can, take a camera drone to really get a view of how epic this rugged landscape is.
- Eat Majorero Cheese – some of the tastiest cheese you will ever eat. Hands down. It is goat’s cheese, but with a mozzarella-like structure. It is perfect in a salad or sandwich and I would recommend stocking up for the return home. There is even a museum dedicated to this amazing stuff.
- Shop in Corralejo – if you are after a bit of retail therapy, Corralejo is a great place to start. Some shops are questionable at best, but in the last few years the market has definitely changed for the better. You can now find pretty much anything that you are after here.
- Acua Water Park – an expensive, but definitive, thing you must do in Fuerteventura. This water park is legendary to locals and tourists alike, and for good reason. You can spend hours enjoying the slides and waves here. Just bring suncream…
- Breakfast at Waikikis – this is a proper tourist trap, but I do love a good fry up. On the beach of Corralejo is the bar-by-night Waikiki. Their full-English (and lunch to be fair) is easily one of the best, all whilst you admire the views of Lobos and the calm sea.
- Throw Popcorn at Popcorn Beach – well, maybe not too much! This is one of the coolest places to visit. The ancient plants genuinely look like everyone’s favourite cinema snack. Perhaps better though is the calm village you’ll find yourself in. Perfect for a picnic.
- Discover Lobos – the nature reserve on the island can be explored by land or sea. Hike along the island and see the natural side of Fuerteventura. If you would rather, you can hire a boat out to see the large cliffs and birds.
- Dive into the Sea – my husband’s highlight each time we go! Scuba diving here is not up there with Thailand, but it is still exciting. See the endangered angel shark, or a manta ray if you’re lucky.
- Step Back in Time at Betancuria – whilst a bit of a pain to get to with the winding mountain roads, a trip to Betancuria is a must. This ancient town is super picturesque and has lots of sights to discover. It also has some of the best places in Fuerteventura to discover about its history.
- Relax in Jandia – I love the long beaches down in the south of the island. Jandia in particular just seems to go on forever and it feels very tropical. If you want a different experience to the north, come down to Morro Jable. You won’t regret it.
- See the Windmills – La Oliva is famous for the stunning windmills that overlook it. Whilst technically in Villaverde, these monuments are perfect for an evening stroll or picnic. You may also see some cute and inquisitive barbary squirrels.
- Trek along a Barranco – deep in the wilderness you can find barrancos, which are essentially dried up riverbeds. Whilst difficult to reach (wake up early and know where you are going), the scenery is well worth it. It will make you feel as if you have just stumbled into deepest Nevada.
- Swim in the Natural Rock Pools – the volcanic island has plenty of these. Some are huge and big enough to let you swim in the crystal clear waters. If you wanted to relax in the natural waters, or snorkel and explore, these are a great place to do either.
- Stargaze at Morro Velosa – a more challenging one (and for the brave), but easily one of the best. Out of all the things that you must do in Fuerteventura, no others require you to drive up bendy mountain roads (with sheer drops), in the dark, to reach them. If you can though, be prepared to see some of the best star displays you will ever see in your life.
- Enjoy the Sun – Fuerteventura demands that you relax when you are there. With the warm weather every single day, this is the perfect place to unwind. I would recommend doing the other 20 in the mornings, but reserve your afternoons for this and your date with ice cream.
