Prague is a great place to have a European weekend away. The city is beautiful and there is so much to see and do. Plus, I think that the food and drink here is also excellent. I often spent 48 hours in Prague on our Interrail adventures, so have made a perfect itinerary for you to follow. I hope that you find it helpful!
48 Hours in Prague | Things That You Must Do
Day 1 – Early Morning and Arrival
Arrive in Praha hlavní nádraží, the main station in Prague. You have probably come in following a reasonably long train journey, so drop your bags off at the hotel. I would recommend staying at the Falkensteiner Hotel. It is in an excellent location and has been recently refurbished for a chic finish.
Day 1 – Late Morning and Lunch
Today, you are going to go on a walk around the main sights of the city. Your first major stop will be the famous Charles Bridge. It is a beautiful example of baroque architecture and is one of the signature monuments of the city. The walk here from the Falkensteiner is just over 2km. Along the way, stop to look at the Church of Our Lady. Take your time walking over the bridge and take pictures looking up and down the river.
Once you cross the bridge, head to the John Lennon Wall. Even though he never visited the city, it was first painted after his assisination. It apparently stood as a symbol for freedom during the communist regime. It is really colourful but, beware, this place is a magnet for tourists!
Your next stop is the funicular up to Petrin Park (called Újezd in Czech). Take this up to the top and head towards Petrin Tower; a perfect place for lunch and an ice cream.
Day 1 – Afternoon
Continue to walk around Petrin Park. There is loads to do here. You could go up the tower for the best view in the city, visit Stefanik Observatory or even find the hidden garden. You can also just sit down on a bench and take in the city.
Once you have taken in the sun’s rays in the park, walk down to the Strahov Monastery. This is on the outskirts of the park and is beautiful. I would really recommend going into it if you can; there is even a tour that operates. For the next leg of your afternoon, walk to Prague Castle. The castle itself is free to go into, but you will need to pay should you want to see any of their exhibitions. I also think the location is fantastic; you get some great views.
As the evening draws in, one place you must go to is the Letna beer garden. The views are spectacular and so is the beer, especially in the sunny weather! This is not too far away from the castle and is well-worth the walk.
Day 1 – Evening
After exploring all day, head back to your hotel and get ready to go out this evening. Tonight you are heading off to one of Prague’s many breweries to sample their local beer and eat their traditional food. One of my favourite dishes is also one of their simplest; deep-fried cheese. Yes, you read that right and yes that comes as a main meal. We went to Bredovský Dvůr, just round the corner from the Falkensteiner. It was tasty, good value and I really enjoyed the meal. A perfect way to round up day 1.
Day 2 – Morning
Wake up halfway through your 48 hours in Prague and enjoy a traditional continental breakfast. I always find that the Czech breakfasts have extra cheeses and meats, which is perfect.
Today you will be exploring the many museums of the city and ending the day with a perfect picnic. Your first stop is the Národní Muzeum, just a stone-throw from your hotel. There is plenty to see here, including natural, prehistoric and mediaeval collections. There are lots of cool things to see here and there are some good cafes if you want to top up on caffeine.
As you leave the museum, you will see that you are on Wenceslas Square. There is not a great deal to see here, but it is the busiest part of the city. If you are here in December, they are also the site for the Christmas Markets.
Your next stop is the Old Town square. You can go via the Lego Museum if you want to as a fun detour. When you are in the Old Town, explore the many streets and find somewhere to have some lunch.
Day 2 – Afternoon
In the afternoon, your first stop is the Klementinum, which is one of the most important buildings in the city. The tour of the building shows you the Prague library and lasts approximately 50 minutes.
After the tour, walk down towards Vyšehrad; a beautiful park in the city. Along the way, walk down the river and take in the many views of the city. See the Dancing House and other famous landmarks of the city. More importantly though, collect some food ready for your picnic!
When you get up to Vyšehrad, walk around the park and take in all the views of the city. I think that this is the perfect place to wrap up 48 hours in Prague. The park is stunning and a picnic here is a really cute and romantic thing to do. If you are planning to do this in the winter, still head up here, but go and eat at a restaurant or brewery instead.
Day 2 – Evening
Once you have finished your picnic and the sun is setting, head back to the hotel. However, on your way, visit the Drinkøtéka Tasting Room. Here you can sample the locally-brewed beer. After all, Prague is famous for its beer and the last evening should be spent sampling it!
Final Thoughts – 48 Hours in Prague
I think that 48 hours in Prague is just enough to see all of the main sights. However, if you were looking for a more comprehensive visit, I would say you need an extra 24 hours. Let me know what you think of this and whether you retraced our steps. I would love to hear about your experience.
