Just outside of Paris is the beautiful town of Chartres; a refreshing escape from the hectic French capital. This little understated town won a big place in my heart when we visited and I instantly loved the quaint French buildings and all they offered. If you’re looking at taking a day trip to Chartres, or are simply interested in gorgeous French towns, this one is for you. Enjoy!
Getting There
Getting to Chartres from Paris is incredibly simple and convenient. The obvious (and quickest) option is to take the train. To get here, you’ll need to take a train from Paris Montparnasse station which runs regularly. The journey should take you an hour and the Chartres station is right in the heart of the town.
If however you have access to a car and want to take the scenic route, then the journey will take you about 90 minutes along the motorway. There is plenty of parking within the town centre.

What to Do in Chartres
Morning: The Chartres Cathedral
Any good day trip to Chartres has to begin at the stunning Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has to be one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in Europe, right up there with Cologne Cathedral.
Whilst you’re here, I would actually advise taking a guided tour, or at least an audio guide. It really dives into the part the Cathedral played in local history. Whilst you’re here, make sure that you visit the famous crypt. It is one of the largest in France and has both historic and religious significance.

Midday: The Old Town and Riverbank
After exploring the cathedral, then head out into the nearby Old Town. You’ll see the quintessential half-timbered houses which only France can truly deliver, alongside delicious goods at cafés. One of my favourites here is Le Comptoir de la Bonté, but you could also try Maison Chardon or Café des Arts. All of these are by the Cathedral so it won’t be long until you’re enjoying that Croque Monsieur!
If you fancy something a bit more upmarket for lunch, then walk down to the Eure River. Along the way there’ll be plenty of boutiques to browse in. At the banks of the river, there are some lovely restaurants that serve local food, all of which is considerably cheaper than Paris! I like either Le Parvis or La Vielle Maison, which both excel in regional, classic dishes like pâté de Chartres or the local cheeses.
Even if you don’t fancy a large lunch, make sure that you walk to the river anyhow. It is one of the nicest parts of the town.

Afternoon: Culture of Chartres
After exploring the riverfront, spend the afternoon diving into the cultural side of Chartres. For those of you who like art, try the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts), which are actually housed in a former bishop’s palace! Inside the museum are an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures across a range of French period. For a quirkier version, why not also explore the Maison Picassiette. This is a short walk from the town centre and it is a house covered in mosaics made of broken glass and pottery.
If art isn’t your thing, an alternative is a riverside walk. The Eure River is beautiful any time of year and you’ll get to see local and historical bridges and water mills. The views aren’t bad either!

Evening: Witness the Chartres Light Show
If Paris is hailed as the City of Lights, then Chartres surely must be the respective town. During the warmer months, I actually would advise taking a later train. If you do this, and wait until the sun sets, then you can enjoy the Chartres en Lumières (light show). You’ll see many of the historic buildings being illuminated with vibrant projects which each narrate stories from the past of the town. It is really beautiful and unique, and well-worth seeing.

Tips for a Perfect Day Trip
- Start Early: Catch an early train to avoid the crowds and make the most out of the day.
- Book Tickets in Advance: For special tours, like the cathedral crypt or Maison Picassiette, make sure that you book tickets in advance. During peak times, these sell-out quickly.
Final Thoughts | A Day Trip to Chartres
A day trip to Chartres is one of my favourite day trips from Paris. Whilst the city of lights is beautiful and is worth spending as much time in as possible, Chartres is a quite oasis and is a perfect escape from the madness of the French capital.
