The western Cotswolds has some of the more understated and lesser-known villages to visit. When compared to tourist-hotspots like Bourton and the Slaughters, this side gets away with being largely unknown, but underappreciated. We recently went exploring here and decided to stay the night at the Hare and Hounds Hotel Tetbury. Here is my review of this unique hotel; a perfect base in this hidden area.
Hare and Hounds Hotel Tetbury | A Review of this Gorgeous Hotel
Getting to the Hare and Hounds Hotel Tetbury
The Hare and Hounds Hotel is located in the village of Westonbirt, just outside of Tetbury. The drive to the hotel is fairly straight-forward. Simply aim for the A433 and continue along it until you reach the hotel. This road is easily-found from the hubs of Cirencester or Bristol.
If you do not own a car, your nearest station is Stroud. Whilst this isn’t too far away, it is still a fair journey for a taxi or Uber. I would completely recommend driving here if you can as the public transport is not too reliable.
The Rooms at the Hare and Hounds Hotel Tetbury
We stayed in a Superior Double Room at the Hare and Hounds and absolutely loved it. We were in the main house and our room had a massive bed, armchairs, a desk and an en-suite. The hotel also boasts about its extensive Moulton Brown toiletries and they are not wrong! You also get a generous supply of luxurious coffee and tea, and soft bath robes. I definitely took full advantage of pampering myself when I was here and loved my room.
Adding to this was the overall atmosphere in the room. The hotel really did feel homely and part of a grand house. I could visualise our hotel room as the perfect place to snuggle under a blanket with a hot peppermint tea after a long day. The room was also clean, tidy and quiet – nothing more that we could ask for, really.
In terms of value for money, this came in at £220.00 for our room. Whilst this is more on the premium end, it included a fantastic breakfast and our room was lovely. Plus, in this area most hotels come in at this price.
The Food at the Hare and Hounds Hotel Tetbury
Starting off with breakfast, the food was really tasty and the hotel was generous with the portions. The buffet had everything that you might expect. You had a choice of pastries, cereals and other Continental options. My pain au chocolat in particular were excellent and tasted like they had come straight out of Paris! I also really liked their yoghurt selection, especially the coconut flavour. Their Full English was also packed and included everything you might expect. It also featured high-quality ingredients which tasted delicious.
For dinner, you can either eat at Jack Hare’s Bar or at the Beaufort Restaurant. We opted for the former and went for their burger. The price was a little steep (£19.00 for a burger and chips) and, whilst the food was nice, I can’t say that I could justify the price for it. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t as tasty as breakfast. What I would say though is that the general atmosphere of the restaurants are both excellent. The main room in the Beaufort Restaurant in particular is stunning.
Service at the Hare and Hounds Hotel Tetbury
I found the service at the Hare and Hounds excellent. During dining hours, the waiters were attentive and would make conversation with us. When we checked-in, the staff were knowledgeable and friendly and made us feel welcome. Plus, a few hours later when the fuse went in our room, they quickly resolved the issue. Overall, I thought that the service was excellent and made the stay even more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts on the Hare and Hounds Tetbury
I loved our stay at the Hare and Hounds. It was the perfect place to come back to after exploring this charming part of the Cotswolds (blog posts incoming!). The food was good and our room was the perfect place to unwind after a busy day. I would not hesitate in recommending the Hare and Hounds Tetbury as a base to explore, or as a cheeky weekend away.
