Heidelberg is one of my favourite, and prettiest, cities in Germany. However, when the festive season approaches, this place gets even more magical. Whether you are looking for an authentic Christmas Market, a magical castle or a scenic view, this place has you covered. Join me as I tell you my favourite things about Heidelberg at Christmas time
Heidelberg at Christmas Time
Universitätsplatz Christmas Market
The first of the city’s markets is found at Universitätsplatz. The official website states that you can find “everything that makes you happy” here and, they are not wrong. From mulled wine to bratwurst in a roll, there is something for everyone here. Perhaps most inviting though is the scenery of Universitätsplatz. You are surrounded by some of the most beautiful buildings in the city and they are reason enough to go. If you are in Heidelberg at Christmas time, this is a good place to start.
Bismarckplatz
This charming market is found just on the outskirts, or entrance, to the Old Town. It is in the perfect position to set the tone for your journey through the older streets. When we went last year, we would grab ourselves a snack for the journey from here, before restocking later down the Old Town. Whilst there is not necessarily loads to see here, it is worth visiting nonetheless.
Karlsplatz
At the other end of the Old Town is Karlsplatz, home to one incredible ice rink. There is a Christmas Market here too, so you can grab a much-needed bratwurst after skating. The backdrop is immense. You are treated to views of Heidelberg Castle whilst you skate along the ice. If you are looking for a romantic location, this one is for you.
Marktplatz
The Marktplatz is one of the main attractions in the Old Town of Heidelberg. The Church of the Holy Spirit stands over the square for the entire year and is a site to behold. However, during the festive period it is home to an exciting Christmas market. I really enjoyed walking around this one with the views around. It also was the perfect place to grab a glass of delicious glühwein (or three!).
Kornmarkt
Just a stone-throw from Marktplatz is the Kornmarkt. Whilst not part of the Marktplatz Christmas Market, the Kornmarkt is one of best things about Heidelberg at Christmas time. For starters, the buildings here are pretty enough as it is. But, when you throw in a bunch of Christmas trees, it makes the entire area magical. I think that this area is best enjoyed around dusk; you get a lovely festive glow.
Heidelberg Castle
Whilst there is not necessarily a large Christmas event here, you cannot go to Heidelberg without seeing the castle. I personally think that it is one of the most magical castles in Germany. The building itself looks like something out of Disney and the setting over the town is just perfect. After skating and eating around Karlsplatz, take the funicular up to the castle for some of the best views around.
Outside of Heidelberg at Christmas Time
Klosterhof Neuburg
Over the river, just opposite the castle, is the old and impressive monastery Neuburg. Over the festive season, you can visit the Christmas Markets here. The produce is all local and unique and is a truly German experience. Whilst not in the heart of Heidelberg, I would recommend venturing out here. Klosterhof Neuburg also acts as a brewery, so you can enjoy a local beer whilst exploring the market.
Speyer
One of my favourite lesser-known places in this area is Speyer. It is a short train ride away from Heidelberg and is well worth a visit. Not only are there some historical marvels, such as the oldest Roman church in the world, but there is a highly impressive market. In terms of variety, surprisingly, there is more here than Heidelberg. I felt that I was spoiled for choice. However, the scenery is nowhere near as stunning as Heidelberg, but it is still worth a visit.
Mannheim
The bustling city of Mannheim has a Christmas Market and, it is exactly how you expect. It is busy with tonnes of variety. Mannheim is very different to Speyer or Heidelberg as it appears much younger. The market reflects that and so just be forewarned before you go. You can find some excellent deals though and again the variety is excellent.
