San Diego is a pretty cool place and is renowned for this. Obviously, we needed a hotel that was equally as chic as the reputation of the city. Fortunately for us, we stumbled across the Hotel Republic San Diego, a modern hotel in the heart of the downtown. This is a review of what we experienced when we stayed here.
Hotel Republic San Diego: A Review
Location
The location of the Hotel Republic San Diego is perfect. You are in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a Californian city, meaning that everything is nearby. A short walk away is the marina, which is perfect for a morning walk. In fact, you are less than half-a-kilometre away from the USS Midway Museum and the waterfront park.
For food lovers, you are just a short walk away from Little Italy, where the food is fantastic. We actually ate out here most evenings; it was super convenient. The Hotel Republic is also not too far away from Balboa Park, and subsequently the famous San Diego Zoo. To get to this green oasis, just grab a bus or walk.
If you wanted to go further afield like we did, the hotel is excellent at helping with transport. When we went to La Jolla, the receptionist was really helpful in ensuring that we had an Uber and gave us some advice too. Whilst the hotel may not be close to other attractions such as Sea World, the public transport links nearby make up for it. For more information, check out my City Guide.
Rooms
I loved our bedroom in the Hotel Republic San Diego. It was crisp, modern and wonderfully decorated. I instantly felt Californian-level cool. It also had a coastal-like vibe, which made me feel more on holiday than other hotels of the trip.
The bed was really comfortable and cosy too. We had a King Size bed with a luxurious mattress and duvet. Opposite this was a large SMART TV which had everything you needed on there. It was here where we discovered that American Netflix is just so much better than the UK version; why do we put up with it??
The bathrooms were also gorgeous and modern, with a large shower and other amenities that you would expect. The main colour was white, which again radiated luxury and cleanliness. It was clear a lot of effort had gone into the design and upkeep, which is always good to see.
Overall, it was a solid 10/10 for the room. The price was reasonable too, with 2022 prices starting at around $300.00 a night. For what we received too, we certainly stumbled across a bargain!
Hotel Lobby and Service
The lobby of the Hotel Republic San Diego will, I am sure, remain one of the coolest and unique lobbies I have seen. I don’t even know what it was; the décor, the art, the themes, perhaps a mixture. Either way, we just loved the vibe as soon as we walked in. The lobby is pretty open plan and it is easy to navigate. There is also a bar, which is perfect for an evening drink.
The service was outstanding as stated above. The staff were really friendly and were always on-hand to give local advice. The food that we received for breakfast was brought up with a smile and they even brought up a pizza takeaway that we ordered through Uber!
The Verdict
Given how much we paid and what we received, I think the Hotel Republic San Diego was an incredible find. It was luxury without the excessive money and made me feel as if I was on an exclusive trip. The location was amazing too and it allowed us to explore all the main sights of the city, even further afield.
In conclusion, if you are in San Diego, see whether there are rooms available. You will not be disappointed.
