Jack and I recently embarked on a wonderful trip to the Munich Christmas Markets. It was filled with yummy food, sightseeing, lots of beer and festive cheer. As with any trip, you need a great, local place to stay. Our last trip to Germany was a few days in Heidelberg last January, and our hotel, the Panorama, set the bar high. After researching for hours, we found the King’s Hotel Center Munich, about a five minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof. This quirky little hotel had tonnes to offer and I can’t wait to share my review.
King’s Hotel Center Munich | A Review
The Downstairs
The entrance to the King’s Hotel Center Munich leaves a lasting impression, all for the right reasons. The entire room is panelled with a light wood, which made it resemble a very traditional Bavarian chalet. The lobby comprises of the front part, where guests can self-check in and out and where you will always find a friendly face. The room is also decorated with quirky features, such as old paintings or two large, blue thrones.
Perhaps the crown jewel of the King’s Hotel Center is the tea and coffee amenities behind the lobby. There is a small kitchenette where guests can make their own drinks, including all the herbal tea flavours you could wish for. You can also find regular complimentary pastries that are leftover from breakfast; a fantastic idea to reduce waste! There are also other drinks and snacks that can be purchased here too.
At the back of the lobby is a courtyard, which would have been perfect in the Summer. In mid-December is was not quite as appealing! There is also a long, glass corridor that takes guests to the second part of the hotel as well as the breakfast room.
The Room
We opted for a Double Room at the King’s Hotel Center Munich. In the room was a large bed, with a unique and beautiful wooden headboard that rose up to the ceiling. Whilst it was not quite a four-poster bed, it definitely felt like one and was truly a bed fit for a king. Our room also had a mini-fridge and lots of space to store our things. There were no tea/coffee-making facilities, but with the area downstairs that was not a problem.
The bathroom was large, clean and spacious and our shower cubicle was also nicely done. As the hotel is 3-star, the bathroom was not overly luxurious, but was excellent value.
Perhaps my favourite part of the hotel is the ‘cleaning fairy voucher’. I’ve not come across this anywhere else, but wish that other places did it. Each room comes with a small bag which you can hang out the night before to show that you do not want the room cleaned. If you do so, and hang it out before midnight, you will find a 10 euro voucher in the bag the next day. You can then use this for breakfast or in the downstairs bar. We did this each day and thought of how much energy and effort could be saved if this was done in every hotel.
Location
The King’s Hotel Center Munich is just a few minutes away from the central station. Whilst there is not much on the road, within a few minutes you can be on the U-Bahn which takes you all over the city. The main tourist area is a walkable distance away; Jack and I did not need to catch the U-Bahn to the nearby Christmas markets in Marienplatz.
Overall, I thought that the hotel was in the perfect position. You were close enough to all the action, but then could slightly retreat to a quieter spot later in the day. Just over the road is a fantastic pizzeria as well as a bakery, both of which I would recommend.
Verdict
The King’s Hotel Center Munich offers excellent value for money in a central location and is perfect for exploring Munich. The staff at the hotel clearly put a lot of pride and effort into their work, which shows. It has a wonderful, homely feel and we genuinely felt a little bit sad to leave it behind. If you are looking for a personal, unique and friendly hotel, look no further. You will receive the ultimate exploratory base at a fantastic price.
