Krakow has to be one of my favourite cities in Europe. The rich history, myths and culture around the city culminate to make a unique experience for even the most seasoned traveller. The best time to go has to be Christmas time. During these winter months, and the proximity to the mountains, you can expect a wintery landscape and (if you’re lucky) plenty of snow. Here is your ultimate guide to Krakow at Christmas time.
Krakow at Christmas Time | Your Ultimate Guide 2024
The Main Square Christmas Market
The Main Square Christmas Market has to be one of my favourites in Europe. Whilst Poland isn’t what you first expect when you think of a Christmas Market, I think that they do it just as well as the Germans or French.
The main square in Krakow is impressive at the best of times, but each Christmas it is meticulously decorated with seasonal fun. You could wander around for hours, eating the incredible food and purchasing handmade festive ornaments. Make sure that you enjoy a glass of grzaniec (mulled wine) whilst you stroll, and be sure to head inside the famous Cloth Hall for an even bigger selection of gifts.
Christmas Fair on Plac Wolnica
If you don’t fancy the crowds of the Main Square, then check out the Christmas Fair on Plac Wolnica. This is otherwise known as the Jewish Quarter and is home to the old square of the town. The fair is set amongst the older buildings in the square, including the old Town Hall. It has a decent selection of food and souvenirs, plus is in an ideal location for an evening meal at a local restaurant.
Visit St. Mary’s Basilica
Located right on the square, St. Mary’s Basilica is one of the most iconic sights in not only Krakow, but Poland. During the Christmas season it is a perfect time to step inside the church and admire its iconic blue starry ceiling and the intricate Veit Stoss altarpiece, one of the largest Gothic altars in the world.
Krakow’s Szopki Tradition
Krakow’s nativity scenes, or szopki, are a unique aspect of the city’s Christmas tradition. These colorful, miniature models of Krakow’s landmarks reimagined as settings for the Nativity story are displayed across the city. This takes place during the first Thursday in December (5th), where the public assemble to show off their work. From here, the best ones are then on display up until February at Krakow Historical Museum.
Wawel Castle in Winter
A stroll to Wawel Hill is particularly incredible during the winter. If you are lucky, you’ll be able to see a stunning snowy landscape all across the city and surrounding hills. Once you get up the hill (and past the fire-breathing dragon!), you can get into the castle grounds. I would recommend that you take a guided tour of Wawel Castle, which means that you can properly explore its grand interiors. Again, if luck is on your side, you can soak in the panoramic views of the Vistula River dusted with snow. In 2024 there are no special events as-such up here, but the castle will be closed over the main Christmas days.
Christmas Eve Dinner: Wigilia
I’ve never had Wigilia, but my mother always told me stories about her experiences as a child growing up in Poland. If you don’t know, Wilgilia is the traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner and, if you have it, then you’re in for a treat. The feast features 12 dishes, including carp (or another fish), barszcz (beetroot soup), and pierogi. No other meat is in it. Many restaurants in Krakow offer special Wigilia menus and you can book these easily.
Ice Skating and Winter Fun
Ice skating is a must-do in Krakow at Christmas time. Around the city, there are plenty of ice skating rinks scattered around the city. The rink at Jordan Park is the most popular (and the best) and is a great way to spend an evening. The standard 90 minute ticket (including skates) is 49PLN, which is about £9.50. A bit of a bargain if you ask me!
Day Trip to Zakopane
If you have time, take a day trip to the winter capital of Poland, Zakopane. To get here, it takes just over two hours from Krakow via train. It is the perfect place to enjoy winter sports or to immerse yourself in a snowy wonderland.
