Mauritius, with its pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons, and lush landscapes, is the perfect destination for couples looking to celebrate their love. When my husband Jack and I chose this tropical paradise for our honeymoon, we were swept away by its charm, tranquillity, and sheer beauty. From luxurious experiences to simple pleasures, Mauritius offers endless opportunities for romance. Here’s a guide to Mauritius for honeymooners to make your holiday unforgettable.
1. Private Boat Ride to Île aux Cerfs
One of our most memorable days was a private boat ride to the enchanting Île aux Cerfs, a small island off Mauritius’ east coast. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand, the island feels like a secluded slice of heaven. We spent the day exploring the lagoons, snorkelling together in vibrant coral reefs, and enjoying a gourmet picnic on the beach. It’s the kind of experience that perfectly captures the magic of being newlyweds.
2. Sunset Dinners by the Ocean
Few things are as romantic as dining by the ocean as the sun sets over the horizon. Many resorts in Mauritius offer private beachfront dinners, complete with candlelight, music, and a curated menu of local delicacies.
3. Couples’ Spa Treatments
Mauritius is known for its world-class spas, and indulging in a couples’ treatment is a must for honeymooners. Treat yourselves to a traditional Mauritian massage or a soothing aromatic bath, all while surrounded by serene tropical gardens. You’ll also thank yourself for the indulgence after the long flight!
4. Tranquil Beach Escapes
While Mauritius has its fair share of lively beaches, it also boasts hidden gems perfect for romantic moments. Our favourite beaches were Le Morne Beach in the south-east, Trou aux Biches on the north-west coast and the stunning beaches around the Blue Bay Marine Park. Whether you’re swimming, lounging, or simply watching the waves, these peaceful settings make for beautiful memories.
5. Stargazing on the Beach
Mauritius’ beaches are also perfect for stargazing, especially the more remote spots. Pack a blanket, lie back, and enjoy the clear, star-filled skies. Some resorts even offer telescopes or guided astronomy experiences for a more immersive evening.
6. Romantic Catamaran Cruise
A sunset catamaran cruise is another must-do activity for honeymooners in Mauritius. Relax on deck with a drink in hand as you sail along the island’s picturesque coastline. Some cruises include dinner, giving you the chance to enjoy a delicious meal while gazing at the starlit sky. If you’re lucky you may even spot some wild dolphins!
7. Explore the Lush Interior
Mauritius isn’t just about beaches—its interior is brimming with natural beauty. Take a hike through the Black River Gorges National Park, where you’ll discover waterfalls, rare birds, and breathtaking viewpoints. Another highlight of our trip was visiting the Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel, a surreal natural phenomenon that feels like stepping onto another planet. We also spent some time in the Ebony Forest and planted a ‘love tree’ as part of our experience.
8. Discover Local Culture Together
Mauritius is a melting pot of cultures, and exploring its vibrant heritage is a wonderful way to bond as a couple. Visit the bustling markets of Port Louis, admire the colonial architecture in Mahebourg, visit the Biscuiterie Rault and explore the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic (Pamplemousse) Gardens. During our time in Mauritius we also took a tour to Ganga Talao, one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage site outside of India, and visited the nearby Bois Cheri Tea Factory and plantation for a tea tasting experience.
9. Explore the Mauritian Street Food Scene
Trying local food in Mauritius is a culinary adventure that blends Creole, Indian, Chinese, and French influences into vibrant, flavourful dishes. Embark on a food tour through Port Louis or Mahebourg, or for a more relaxed experience, visit local eateries like Karay Mario or enjoy thoughtfully prepared traditional dishes at your hotel. Some of our favourite local dishes included:
- Farata – A flaky, buttery flatbread often served with curry or chutneys, perfect for a quick and delicious snack.
- Gateau piment – Crispy lentil fritters spiced with chili, a popular street food with a kick.
- Biryani – A fragrant rice dish layered with marinated meat, spices, and sometimes potatoes, showcasing Indian-Mauritian flavours.
- Dholl puri – Thin, stuffed flatbreads filled with spiced yellow split peas, typically served with bean curry and chutneys.
- Alouda – A sweet, refreshing drink made with milk, basil seeds, and flavoured syrup, often compared to a light milkshake.
- Cari Poisson – A spicy and fragrant fish curry infused with Indian and Creole flavours, a staple in Mauritian households.
10. Helicopter Ride Over the Island
Although we didn’t do this during our visit, a helicopter ride over the island would be a fantastic honeymoon experience. Not only will you get some amazing views and a different perspective of the island’s lush sugarcane fields, lagoons, and iconic landmarks like Le Morne Brabant but you’ll also be able to see the Underwater Waterfall optical illusion!
11. Private Rum Tasting
Mauritius is known for its high-quality rum, and a private tasting session can be a fun and intimate way to spend an afternoon. Visit a local distillery, like Rhumerie de Chamarel, and sample a variety of flavours while learning about the rum-making process. If you want to find out more about the island’s history whilst indulging in sugar and rum tasting together, I would also recommend the L’Aventure du Sucre near Pamplemousses. The restaurant here is fantastic!
12. Kayak Through the Mangroves
If you’re looking to do something a little more active, why not explore Mauritius’ mangrove forests on a guided kayak tour. Glide through serene waterways surrounded by lush greenery and exotic birdlife for a peaceful and romantic adventure. Some of the best spots include Tamarin Bay, sea kayaking from Le Morne to Île aux Bénitiers, and along the Mahebourg coast.
13. Visit the Islets Around Mauritius
In addition to Île aux Cerfs, consider exploring other nearby islets. We spent half a day on Île aux Aigrettes, a conservation island off the south coast, and learnt about Mauritius’ incredible biodiversity, encountered giant Aldabra tortoises and looked out for the illusive pink pigeon (sadly no sightings though!) Île aux Benitiers or Gabriel Island are also great options and are known for their crystal-clear waters and dolphin sightings.
14. Explore Underwater Together
Try an underwater walk or a tandem scuba dive to experience Mauritius’ vibrant marine life up close. If you’re not certified, many operators offer beginner-friendly options, including snorkelling tours to coral reefs and shipwrecks. If you don’t fancy heading below the water, you could consider a glass-bottomed boat ride.
15. Swim in a Natural Pool
Discover hidden natural pools like those at Rochester Falls or Tamarin Falls, where you can swim together in a serene, tropical setting. These spots are quieter and more intimate than the typical tourist beaches.
16. Sunset Photo Shoot
Capture the magic of your honeymoon with a professional sunset photo shoot on one of Mauritius’ stunning beaches. Let the golden hour light and romantic setting create timeless memories you’ll cherish forever.
17. Catch an East-Coast Sunrise
Start your day with an unforgettable sunrise on Mauritius’ east coast. We enjoyed a beautiful morning at the Belle Mare Beach and on our last morning woke up to enjoy a spectacular sunrise at our hotel, The Lagoon Attitude. The quiet, serene setting and pastel skies make it worth the early alarm, I promise!
Why is Mauritius Perfect for Honeymooners?
Having spent my own honeymoon in Mauritius, I can confidently say it’s a destination that truly celebrates love. From the luxurious accommodations and incredible food to the breathtaking landscapes and heartfelt hospitality, the island sets the stage for romance at every turn. It also a slightly cheaper option compared to other similar tropical destinations. You could also look at my Mauritius 1 week itinerary for more inspiration.
