Like it or loathe it, Instagram is here to stay. If anything, I enjoy using my Instagram as a memoir of all of the exciting places I have travelled. It also is a bit of an artistic-fix as I love playing with the colours and scenery. Mauritius was no exception and I visited some of the most incredible places on my journey. I also missed out a few which I will have to get back to! Without further ado, here is my guide on the most instagrammable spots in Mauritius. Happy photo-taking!
Most Instagrammable Spots in Mauritius
1. Le Morne and the Underwater Waterfall
It goes without saying that Le Morne is the iconic view people associate with Mauritius. This beautiful peninsula has a sad history and is so-named to symbolise the historical significance of slavery. We did not get to climb up the legendary mountain whilst we were there, but we did get an amazing view at the Ebony Forest. If you wanted to go the extra mile, you will need a drone. We have a DJI Mavic Mini, but did not get a chance to fly it over from the underwater waterfall side. Easily one of the most iconic views in the world.
2. Chamarel Waterfall
The first of a few Chamarel entries. Firstly, we need to talk about this stunning waterfall. The viewpoint is absolutely stunning and gives you a great view of the falls. It flows into a large basin and you are treated to views of the forest below and the tropic birds flying overhead. It makes for an impressive photograph wherever you stand. There is (sadly) a path that goes right to the edge, made by people looking for that instagram snap. Don’t be that person – you can get a great photo from the designated space.
3. Chamarel Seven Coloured Sands
Just down the road is the seven coloured sands, another iconic view of Mauritius. You will have to judge the light for this one. On the day we went, it was quite overcast, so you did not get the best photo. I found that by moving to the other side of the sands (the far end), the light was much better and I picked up more colours.
4. Chamarel Ebony Forest
The ebony forest is a lesser-known iconic Mauritius destination. The ebony tree species here are endemic to the country and are endangered. If you book a trip through the ebony forest tours (see my blog post here) you can trek through the ancient rainforest. On the way, we saw rare birds (lots!), chilled flying foxes, baby tenrecs and lots of lizards. You can get some really awesome shots. I would recommend bringing a zoom lens greater than 300mm if you want to get the wildlife shots. Ours was smaller than that and struggled to capture some animals in as much detail as I would have liked.
5. Chamarel Sublime Point
After exploring the ebony forest, you have the option to climb up to the Sublime Point. Our tour included it, but others may not. When you get up there, you realise why it is called sublime. You probably get as good as a view in Mauritius that you could want. You can see Le Morne, the coastline, villages and a green tone that oozes tropical oasis. To add to this, you can eat some very tasty local snacks whilst you wait. The chilli bites are particularly good.
6. Pamplemousse Gardens
Going with the nature-theme is the Pamplemousse Gardens. Here you can again see a lot of animals, including a huge colony of flying foxes. However, the most iconic shot has to be the giant water lily pond. You may have to wait to get that perfect shot with all the tourists around, or you will need to get there extra early. Everyone knows it is one of the most instagrammable spots in Mauritius! Also have a look at the range of different tree species and just have a play with shots. The leaf variety gives you new effects that could work better for you.
7. Coral Reefs
Before we get started on this, I am not the most confident swimmer. Because of this I really struggle to take those typical instagram pictures in the water. However, I am married to an experienced diver so I do know a few things about underwater photography. The coral reefs around Mauritius are breathtakingly beautiful. You can see gorgeous colourful fish, turtles, sharks and even dolphins. I would recommend going early to try and get the change of ‘shift’ on the reef. You also will need a red filter for your GoPro to bring in all the colour. You can do this on Lightroom after, but you save half of the battle with it.
8. Bois Cheri Tea Plantation
This was, personally, one of my favourite landscapes and fully deserves a place on the most instagrammable spots in Mauritius. If you are a tea-lover like me, you can enjoy a tea-tasting class whilst you allow your creative juices to flow. You can then meander through the plantation, taking all the photos you desire. A great spot is the pontoon on the lake, but watch out for the wild monkeys!
9. Cap Malheureux
The iconic red church is a symbol of Mauritius and one that is easy to get to in the north. If you are staying in a southern hotel, this will be quite a trek for you. However, in the evening light, this church and bay makes for one incredible photo location. You also have a long pontoon by the water to give you different perspectives.
10. The Coastline
My last entry comes from an impromptu photoshoot. We decided to leave the Lagoon Attitude and go for a walk one afternoon. We stayed near the coastline and found a native forest. This suddenly became a photoshoot and the uniquely-textured leaves made for an incredible background. In the same place at dawn the next day, I captured a shot of the local fishermen in the water. If you stray slightly from your hotel, you can find some hidden gems by the sea. My last piece of advice is go out and take photographs of unique locations; they don’t all have to be strictly instagrammable.
