On the last evening of our trip to Cornwall, we stayed at the Port William Tintagel. We arrived the evening before in the midst of a thunderstorm. The headlights of the car only allowed us to see some of the newfound location. Car parking is slightly tricky here, you have to park your car at the base of the road that leads to the hotel. From there, you walk a few hundred metres to the Port William. Battling through the elements, we eventually made it up the slope and into the warmth.
Port William Tintagel: A Review
The Downstairs
The lobby immediately felt homely. They had a box filled with blankets that you could help yourself to, as well as lots of coastal décor. It felt like a rustic wooden cabin at the seaside. The receptionist was extremely helpful and showed us to our rooms. I already had a lovely feeling about this place and was excited to get to our room.
The Upstairs – Bedrooms
Our room (number 4) was lovely. It was sea-facing (not that I could see it at this time) and continued a strictly nautical theme. The bed was large and inviting and the bathroom had been recently renovated. All in all, I was very happy with the room and spent the next few hours drinking tea and doing admin.
After we had popped down to dinner (see below), I jumped into bed. I had a great night’s sleep and woke to the most gorgeous sea view. You could hear the waves crashing all night, which was really peaceful. The morning gave us a full view of the coastline and the giant white cliffs nearby. It just looked so inviting and I spent a while looking out and drinking my tea. The bedrooms of the Port William Tintagel were excellent and I would thoroughly recommend.
The Food of the Port William
The Port William Tintagel is part of the St Austell Brewery. This means that it has a similar menu to the other pubs in the group. Our table was sea-facing for the dinner. Whilst we could not see the sea, we heard the elements clearly through the glass. This went nicely with the coastal paintings and decorations around us. I of course helped myself to a blanket, got cosy, and began looking at the menu.
There were lots to choose from, however I eventually went for the chicken supreme. My husband chose the scampi and chips. The food took a little while to come. Whilst we waited, we sampled some Korev, one of the beers from the brewery. It was really light and drinkable with some nice sweet notes.
When the food arrived, we tucked in. My chicken supreme was tasty, although the portion size was rather small, meaning I had to order a side. Ideally, I would have liked something additional on the plate. The burger however was a hit and both tasty and filling. It was loaded with toppings so that the flavours just shone through. For dessert, we went for some of the ice cream. I went for raspberry, which was really good, and Jack went for chocolate.
For breakfast, I would say that the Port William Tintagel delivered. Jack went for the Full Cornish breakfast and I went for the berry pancakes. The food, complete with a latte and orange juice, arrived quickly and was excellent. Jack’s portion was large and all of it looked really tasty. My pancakes were lovely too, with a generous amount of berries and Greek yoghurt to compliment it. There was also a large continental breakfast too.
Overall, the food at the Port William Tintagel was nice. However, it was a shame my portion was so small at dinner, perhaps it was just that option.
Things to do
The Port William is near many different attractions that you could visit. Firstly, you have Tintagel Castle, which is just a stone throw away. Make sure that you get there relatively early though as it gets busy!
Not too far away are the Lost Gardens of Heligan. I really like this place and, during the autumn when it is quiet, it’s a perfect day out. I absolutely adore all of the different habitats that they have made. A favourite of mine is the Burmese Rope Bridge – my blog post on the Lost Gardens is coming soon!
In the Summer, you also have a good few beaches to choose from. You have a lovely one (Trebarwith Strand) just at your doorstep in the cove, which is perfect for a morning walk.
You also are not too far away from Port Isaac, made famous by Doc Martin.
The Verdict
The Port William Tintagel is a lovely little place and I would recommend a visit. The food is tasty and it is in a perfect location. I would say that the cosiness and feeling of home were big plusses though. I also adored my morning view of the beach – what a way to wake up!
