Sunday lunches are a treat at the end of a long week. I have been battling through a barrage of Masters assignments recently, so a nice lunch was definitely in order. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to be invited to Browns Oxford to try their Sunday Festive Menu.
Sunday Lunch Oxford: Review of Browns Oxford
The Restaurant
When you enter Browns you immediately feel that you have entered a French bistro. The décor is perfectly on point, from the red-fabric booths to the large station clock.
I absolutely loved the chairs too, which were dusky shades of red and green. They were also exceptionally comfy; always a bonus!
The waiters were all kind and friendly and you could tell that they really cared about the service. The staff all wore long white aprons too, which added to the bistro atmosphere.
Overall, I really liked the vibe of the restaurant; it was perfect for a Sunday Lunch in Oxford. Now onto the food…
The Food
The Starters
You have a fair amount of choice at Browns Oxford for kicking off your Sunday Lunch. There were chicken teriyaki skewers, as well as duck & orange parfait and even crispy squid.
Obviously, I couldn’t resist the squid, served with a beautiful aioli. The dish was wonderfully presented and was a very generous portion. The batter was lovely and crispy, with the squid being succulent and soft. The lemon on the side was also seared to give it more of a sweetness, which I appreciated.
Definitely a 10/10 from me!
Mains
The Sunday Menu at Browns at the moment is similar to usual, just with some Christmas twists. Their burgers now feature a cranberry, camembert and pancetta combination, which looked incredible!
However, as it was a Sunday Lunch in Oxford, I just had to go for the roast beef. To be a bit cheeky, I also added some cauliflower cheese on the side, to make the Sunday Lunch complete.
The mountain of food arrived shortly after ordering; it was a feast. The sirloin beef was perfectly pink and marbled with fat. I really enjoyed each mouthful of this and the red wine gravy complimented it greatly.
The roast carrots were charred too, making them extra sweet. The roast potatoes were lovely and crispy, as were the parsnips. Not to forget the greens, there was also a portion of cabbage and green beans. Most importantly however, there was a giant tasty Yorkshire pudding.
The main portion was huge, but excellent. Perhaps the star was the cauliflower cheese, which was super soft and extremely cheesy. There were some impressive cheese pulls that day.
Browns definitely delivered on this Sunday Lunch and I was very happy with it.
Dessert
Even after a mountain of food, I still have room for dessert. What to choose from; there were so many wonderful options.
In the end, I went for the blackcurrant and raspberry pavlova. I also got my husband to order the salted caramel profiteroles so that I could really give a fair review…
The desserts were beautiful, inside and out. They looked perfect and did not disappoint with taste. The pavlova was light and fluffy, which was just what I needed after a big Sunday lunch.
The profiteroles were also delicious, with a rich homemade salted caramel sauce. My poor husband didn’t get to eat many of them!
The Verdict
If you are reading this looking for a great place to have a Sunday Lunch in Oxford, go to Browns. The food was great, as was the ambience and service.
Plus, you are just a stone throw away from some great Museums and attractions. I cannot wait to go back and treat ourselves… I want to tackle that burger.
