What do you think of when you think of France? Romance, food, culture… And all of this during the holiday season becomes even more magical. Within any country in Europe, one of the best ways to experience the festive spirit is by visiting the local Christmas markets. The markets in France are different to those that you’ll find in Germany. You’ll still find (plenty of) mulled wine and festive foods, but with a French stamp. So, if you fancy a change, here are the best Christmas Markets to visit in France.
The Best Christmas Markets to Visit in France
Strasbourg Christmas Market
Arguably the most famous Christmas market in France, the Strasbourg Christmas Market (Marché de Noël) has been celebrated since 1570. Not only is it old by French standards, but it is also one of the oldest in Europe. Strasbourg’s market is the centre point of the Capital of Christmas, set in the historic Grande île, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the market you’ll find over 300 stalls spread across various locations. You can find a wide range of handmade crafts, Christmas decorations, and even delicious treats like bredele (Alsatian cookies), flammekueche (Alsatian flatbread), and vin chaud (mulled wine).
The centre of all of the festivities is the massive Christmas tree in Place Kléber. This is beautifully illuminated and stands as a symbol of Strasbourg’s festive spirit. In Strasbourg you’ll also experience various cultural performances, including choirs, bands, and light shows. It really is an unforgettable destination for all Christmas lovers.
Open from: 27 November to 27 December 2024
Paris Christmas Markets
Of course, no list of French Christmas markets would be complete without mentioning Paris. Although Paris doesn’t have one large central market, there are several Christmas markets throughout the city. The most famous one is located at Champs-Élysées, which in 2024 has over 400 trees illuminated in golden light. You can also find the traditional wooden chalets lining the streets which sell most of the things you would expect.
For a more intimate experience, head to Le Marais, where you’ll find the Marché de Noël des Enfants Rouges. This charming market is set in one of Paris’ oldest covered markets. If you are after a more traditional feel, then the market in Montmartre is the ideal spot. Here you can find a market with a more quaint feel and this tends to be quieter than the more popular places.
If you did want somewhere a bit more lively, then don’t forget to stop by La Défense for one of the largest Christmas markets in the Paris area, featuring over 350 stalls with everything from unique gifts to food from around the world.

Lille Christmas Market
The Lille Christmas Market can be found in the heart of the Hauts-de-France region. It is set against the backdrop of the stunning Grand Place and features over 80 chalets. Each one specialises in offering a variety of regional specialties, such as Northern French pastries, sweets, and artisan crafts. The market is also known for the local speculoos cookies!
One of the highlights has to be the beautiful Ferris wheel, which gives stunning views all over the city. You can also spot the impressive Christmas tree located in the central square.
Open from: 20 November to 29 December 2024
Colmar Christmas Market
Nestled in the heart of the Alsace region, Colmar’s Christmas market is known for an almost fairy-tale charm. The market is spread across several scenic squares, and each one has its own distinct atmosphere. Adding to the fairytale Christmas are the medieval buildings, cobblestone streets, and festive lights which culminate to create a magical backdrop. Whether you are looking to go shopping, eating, or simply enjoying the Christmas cheer, you can find everything here from artisanal gifts and Christmas decorations to local treats like sauerkraut, choucroute, and Alsatian wines. I think that this is one of the best Christmas Markets to visit in France and is usually quieter than Strasbourg. However, I would advise going on a weekday as it still can get pretty busy.
Open from: 26 November to 29 December 2024
Nice Christmas Market
If you’re looking to experience a French Christmas market with a more Mediterranean flair and bit of ‘ooh la la’, then Nice on the French Riviera could be the place to be. I know it isn’t what usually comes to mind when people think about Christmas, but the Marché de Noël in Place Masséna offers a unique combination of festive cheer and beautiful coastal views. Quite the combination!
The market has a distinctly Southern French twist, with stalls selling Provencal crafts, local sweets like calissons, and artisanal goods. You can also find a wonderful selection of Christmas ornaments, handmade soaps, and even local lavender.
If you have had enough of Christmas Markets, then the city hosts a beautiful ice skating rink and a festive light display for you to enjoy.
Open from: 29th November to 1st January 2025
Aix-en-Provence Christmas Market
Aix-en-Provence is a beautiful destination to visit during Christmas. With the Provençal atmosphere you would expect, the city has an incredible Christmas market set in the historic Place des Prêcheurs and Cours Mirabeau. It has a village-like feel and, again, you’ll find all the typical French treats, but with that extra bit of Southern France charm.
One of my favourite aspects of the Aix-en-Provence market is the Crèche Provençale (Nativity scene), which is an integral part of local Christmas tradition.
Open from: 15th November to 31st December 2024
Mulhouse Christmas Market
In Mulhouse, you’ll find one of the most festive markets in France’s Alsace region. The Marché de Noël is set in the city’s beautiful historic centre. The market also features a variety of Christmas-themed activities for visitors of all ages. You can find horse-drawn carriage rides, live music, and more live performances. Most uniquely though is the Christmas Cloth, a fabric which lines the streets during the festive period. It also changes each year, so you’ll have to visit a few times to see a few varieties!
Mulhouse is, in my opinion, a bit of a hidden gem. It is one of the quietest markets on this list and has enough unique charm and appeal to bowl anyone over.
Open from: 22nd November to 24th December 2024
Lyon Christmas Market
The markets in Lyon are spectacular and are well worth a visit. You can wander through quaint stalls brimming with unique gifts and sample seasonal delicacies like praline brioche and vin chaud. Or, be transported to the future and see The Festival of Lights on the 5th of December. From Place Carnot’s traditional market to the artisanal crafts at Croix-Rousse, there’s something for everyone at the markets. Lyon specialises in highlighting local crafts and businesses, so you can be sure that whatever you take home is unique. If this isn’t one of the best Christmas Markets to visit in France then I don’t know what is.
Open from: 24th November to 24th December 2024
Montpellier Christmas Market
Stroll through the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle, transformed into a sparkling and fabulous winter village. In true Provence-style, see the famous Nativity scene or glide on the ice rink. Then, pay a trip to Santa before stuffing your face with the local food and wine. Similarly to Nice, a Mediterranean Christmas may sound unconventional, but I promise that it is certainly worth experiencing. After all, you don’t need to wrap up too warm and it is never too crowded. Win-win.
Open from: 30th November to 30th December 2024
Metz Christmas Market
Renowned for its enchanting lights and festive atmosphere, Metz is known as one of the best Christmas Markets to visit in France. At Place de la Republique, you can spot the iconic Christmas Pyramid. Or, if that isn’t your thing, head to Place d’Armes for the giant 60m tall Ferris Wheel! Once you’ve done that, head back into the market and indulge in some classically French gourmet treats. All of this under the gorgeous architecture of Metz makes this one of my favourites on this list.
Open from: 22nd November to 30th December 2024
Toulouse Christmas Market
Once again, if you think that Toulouse can’t be a winter destination, I urge you to reconsider. The markets here have some amazing stands with locally-crafted gifts and food, all under the city’s iconic pink-hued architecture. Plus, you can sample regional staples such as Toulouse sausages and traditional nougat. The best one is at Place de Capitole that certainly delivers the ideal destination for a (warmer) winter getaway.
Open from: 23rd November to 26th December 2024
