Recently Jack and I visited the Cheese Shed in Nettlebed. We had heard great things on the grape vine about both their cheese and the ultimate cheese toasty and had to find out for ourselves what was on offer.
Having visited, I would definitely recommend paying the Cheese Shed a visit, whether you are looking for a quirky place to stop for a coffee or bite to eat, or perhaps throwing your own cheese and wine soiree – this is the place to go!
It’s safe to say that the Cheese Shed Nettlebed are becoming a big deal around the Henley area. Here is a quick review of the place and a bit on what to expect when you go.
The Cheese Shed Nettlebed: Visiting the Nettlebed Creamery
Where is the Cheese Shed Nettlebed?
Nettlebed is a small village in between Henley-on-Thames and Wallingford along the A4130. If you continue along the main road you will eventually pass a crossing with some lights. Keep going and you will see a large sign pointing to the Cheese Shed on the corner.
Go down the lane and then keep going until you see the large car park. I think it is also used for walkers too as the surrounding hills are really nice. If you are going on the weekend, I would suggest you get there early as it can get rather busy! The Cheese Shed Nettlebed is actually just a converted barn, which is just adjacent to the car park.
The Barn
The Cheese Shed is open plan and half of the walls are exposed (bring a coat!). They have really gone for a nice traditional barn atmosphere, with hayed floors and original features. They have then lots of cute decorations which are all on-point.
At one end, you have the bar, where you can order your food and drink (more on that in a bit). You then have a small and cute shop, which sell their own award-winning cheeses and other popular local items. A lot of the produce here is either in-house or local, but all are of exceptional quality.
Lastly, there are plenty of seats around the barn and there is also outdoors seating. There is also a really funky The Cheese Shed sign which dominates most of the space.
Overall, I loved the atmosphere and felt very much a country girl almost instantly. The only downside is that I got rather chilly rather quickly, but that is because we went in November! I cannot wait to go back in the Summer.
The Food and Drink
Cheese is the main reason to visit (who would have thought!) and they don’t disappoint. For £6.00, you can go for their famous toastie, which features off-cuts of their award-winning cheeses. I ordered this and got the best cheese-pull I have ever seen. The toastie was light and crispy, whilst also oozing with cheeses. As they use a combination, you really get loads of different flavours with each bite.
For similar prices that you would find in a Costa, you can also get some warm drinks. I thought that the coffee was very nice and really warmed me up. I also thought it was fairly priced for what we had.
If you are in a rush and just want the good stuff, head over to the shop. They have three cheeses to choose from; the Highmoor, the Bix and the Witheridge in Hay. All of them are fantastic, although I particularly liked the Bix. It had an unbelievably creamy texture and just melted in my mouth.
You can buy these for a great price here and in varying sizes. With Christmas just around the corner, I’m stocking up for all of those cheese boards.
The Verdict
If you haven’t been to the Cheese Shed Nettlebed, do it. The toastie is reason enough to go; I say it is probably the best I’ve ever had. The staff are also really friendly and it is a small local business that you will be supporting. So, what are you waiting for… Get a moooo – ve on and go to the Cheese Shed. Sorry, that was a bit cheesy…
