On our Cornwall trip we stayed at the Victoria Inn Perranuthnoe. It is just a stone throw away from Penzance and St. Michael’s Mount and is well-known for the excellent food. We were only there for two nights and were able to sample all that the pub had to offer. So if you are thinking of staying here, this reiew is for you!
The Victoria Inn Perranuthnoe: A Review
The Pub – Downstairs
The pub of the Victoria Inn Perranuthnoe downstairs is typical of a quaint, cute Cornish pub. There are a couple of wood-burning fires dotted around the rooms and they sell a selection of different beers and ales. The décor has clearly had some thought put into it, with comfortable chairs and cushions with every table.
One key feature I remember is the selling of local prints. There were landscapes of the local area and marine creatures and all are for sale. This added a nice homely vibe and I liked the support of the local community.
The staff were really friendly too and were more than helpful. They were also able to give suggestions and tips for food and drink, but we will get to that later. Overall, a lovely pub downstairs and one I would go back to.
The B & B – Upstairs
The upstairs rooms of the Victoria Inn were really nice and were done well. The floor has been restored from the original wood and is painted white, giving a distinct beach vibe. There is a large television in each room and there are trinkets that also remind you of the coast. The colour palate is also coastal, but that is what I loved about these rooms. So different from downstairs!
The bathroom is simple, but effective. There are sage subway tiles around the shower and bathroom and a crisp white paint around the rest of it. But, it was very clean and again they brought in the coastal vibes.
At night, the room was quiet and we did not hear the pub downstairs much, if at all. The bed was comfy and I really felt at home.
The Food
Food at the Victoria Inn Perranuthnoe went beyond expectations. There are plenty of Michelin stickers at the windows of the pub, which tell you about the quality of the food. There menu may be a bit pricey (expect around £60.00+ a head), but it was worth it.
The dishes we had were really tasty. Jack had their Halloween cheeseburger, served in a charcoal bun. I had their spiced gnocci with pumpkin and babaganoush, which was perfect for an autumnal evening. On the other nights, we had the chicken and lamb, which again were incredible!
For dessert, I had mille-feuille and Jack sampled their local Cornish cheeses. The waiters were great and helped us pair different things on the menu to help our experience.
On to breakfast now – their full Cornish was amazing. All locally sourced ingredients of a high quality, and featuring everyone’s favourites. It was something to look forward to each morning, even if they were ever so slightly late opening up once.
The Local Area
The local area surrounding Perranuthnoe is filled with different things to do. An absolute must is a visit to St. Michael’s Mount, just be sure to check the low-tide timings for when you can cross the causeway.
You are also not far away from Mousehole and Land’s End, both of which make for a nice trip. I really liked Mousehole as it had a cute and quaint feel to it and in the summer it is apparently great for spotting marine life.
The Verdict
Would I stay at the Victoria Inn Perranuthnoe again? Absolutely. It was comfortable, chilled and above all the service was great. Food was a little pricey, but seeing as the quality was incredible, it was worth it for a little treat. The staff were also highly friendly, even if they did have to greet us at 8:00am!
If you are thinking of a Cornish getaway and want somewhere that is off the tourist trail and has character, look no further. The Victoria Inn is a hidden gem.
