Brunch is one of my favourite weekend activities and I can often be found enjoying something light with a latte most saturday mornings. Henley is a great place to enjoy brunch. Whilst slightly upmarket given the area, there is some incredible food, unique locations and still some great value. Here is my guide to the top places for brunch in Henley-on-Thames.
Spoon Cafe
Found on Duke Street in Henley (right next to Vinegar Hill) is the Spoon Cafe. This small little cafe delivers some excellent food that will leave you wanting more. I personally love the locally-run, independent feel of this place. Because it is small, there is a more limited choice on the menu, but you really cannot beat the quality. If you have some out-of-town friends and want to show off Henley, this is the place for you.
Coppa Club Henley
Now for a very different vibe and, to be honest, if it weren’t for more recent experiences I was not going to include this. A few years back our visits here were average at best and we both left feeling disappointed. However, in our previous visits they really have turned a corner. It is a chain but there is an undeniable chic and cool feeling to this place. Plus, the skillet breakfast is incredibly presented and tasty. Perfect for larger parties.
Bistro at the Boathouse
Time for one of my favourite menus now with Bistro at the Boathouse. This family-run business is undeniably one of the best places for brunch in Henley-on-Thames. It sits just on the river too for that all-important atmosphere. The menu features something for everyone and I love the creativity and character that goes into it. You could try the giant Boathouse Bonanza, or maybe the elegant Cookie and Cream Ice Cream Waffle dish. Make sure you book ahead as this place is popular.
Berries
Whilst not a typical fry-up place for brunch, Berries provides a more intimate setting for a coffee and pastry. Located on Hart Street, this place is known for artisan coffee and a range of incredible baked treats. This is not a place for a sit-down meal, but more of a location to catch up with friends and enjoy seriously good coffee.
Harris and Hoole
Also on Hart Street is Horris and Hoole. Known for its posh appearance and upmarket vibe, this place does, in its credit, do good coffee and food. Whilst maybe on the pricier side, the breakfasts here are very tasty and I really enjoy their range of drinks. Again, maybe not the place for a sit-down brunch, but a good option for catching up with friends.
Hot Gossip
Hot Gossip is a local establishment with a reputation of seriously good coffee and cake. There are also hot breakfast options too which are tasty, although limited; do not expect a full brunch here. I do however love the family-run atmosphere of this place. If you are in the mood for something small and somewhere quiet, this is a great option for you. I would also add that their selection of cakes is, always, excellent.
The Chocolate Cafe
Now I know what you are thinking, the Chocolate Cafe does not sound like the place to get a savoury brunch. This is where you would be wrong as they secretly have one of the best menus for brunch. Whether you want a classic full English, a breakfast burger or even smashed avocados on toast, you can find it here. Plus, it is right by the river. Easily one of my favourite places for brunch in Henley-on-Thames.
The Clipper Restaurant
The Clipper Restaurant is at the Relais, just by the river at the end of Hart Street. This imposing building, whilst seemingly highly upmarket, offers a breakfast for a generally cheap (relatively) breakfast and at a really high quality. They have a wide menu and I like the older-style atmosphere. Plus, the hotel has a rich and fascinating history that only adds to the experience.
Cote Brasserie
Last up is Cote Brasserie. I absolutely adore the interior of this one in Henley; it transports you straight to Paris in the 1970s. It is cool and quirky and there is just so much that is right with it. The food is also very good and tasty and this, with the atmosphere, makes for a brunch that will leave you saying ‘tres bien’. It is on the pricier side of this list though, especially considering the portion sizes, so just consider that.
