Summer is well and truly over. The weather has gone majorly downhill in the last few weeks, the leaves are brown and I have been back teaching at school for over a month – three large indicators that the Summer is over and the next best thing is Christmas… And then Summer again. Normally I would see the school year as a continuous cycle like this, with Easter as a weird ‘halfway’ point. However, this year I’ve decided to be a bit more optimistic. In fairness, Autumn is never actually that bad, in a way the thought of red leaves filling a woodland is quite romantic. I therefore thought that I should write down the top ten things to do in the autumn. To my surprise, there are actually quite a few things (except spider season; that sucks).
Top Ten Things to do in the Autumn
1. The Fire Goes On
One of the things I am most looking forward to this autumn is having my wood burner fire on. There is something just super cosy about getting under a blanket with a cup of tea with a blazing fire on in the background. Often I find that it is actually amazing for making me feel more positive.
2. Autumn Walks
Walks in the countryside in wellies and being wrapped up in a thick coat scream autumn to me. The vibrant colours on the leaves, both in the trees and on the floor, really transform the landscape and give a very homely feel. Sometimes nothing can beat a sunny, yet crisp, autumnal day. Without a doubt, one of the top ten things to do in the autumn.
3. Bonfire Night
Bonfire night is a big tradition in the United Kingdom. For a good week throughout November the skies are lit up by reds, greens and purples. Each year, we always go to a local display and make the most of it, whether that be through writing our names with a sparkler or treating ourselves to some warm and tasty food. Sometimes, a cosy night in, maybe with some sparkler fun in the garden, is just the thing. If you’re English, this will 100% be one of your top ten things to do in autumn.
4. Healthier Foods
Okay, this one doesn’t necessarily need to be just in the autumn, but after a lockdown of eating rubbish and having recently been inspired by Zac Efron’s show on Netflix, we have decided to really try to eat healthier over the coming months. Usually, warm comfort foods are a staple to get you through the tougher months, so why not combine that with a healthy lifestyle?
5. New Term, New Me
September is essentially the teacher version of New Year and each year we set ourselves targets to really improve our teaching. One month in and I’m enjoying the challenges of learning and teaching new things 🙂
6. Blankets in the Evening
This one can be linked to the first item in this list, although I often find that my natural habitat is under a blanket during most of the year. Personally, if you need to do some work at home, what better way is there than getting under a blanket? The same could go for watching television!
7. Planning the Wedding
Again, this one doesn’t need to strictly be limited to the autumn, although this year I am really looking forward to planning more of our big day. Covid certainly has thrown a few things up in the air (for instance will it actually be able to take place next year) but fingers crossed things get a bit more ‘back to normal’ by then. Autumn just seems like the perfect time to plan. When it’s a rainy day and you just don’t want to venture outside, why not grab a blanket, put on the fire and get planning.
8. Autumn Clothes
Who doesn’t love cosy autumn wear? Jumpers and coats are great to wear and I’m looking forward to resurrecting my cosiest clothes.. and maybe adding a few new items to my collection!
9. Guilt Free Duvet Days
After a busy week at school, sometimes all I need is a duvet day to binge watch films or a tv show. Last year we shamelessly watched an entire season of You in one day, something that could only be done during this time of year. Check out my list of Shows to Transport you During Lockdown to get some inspiration!
10. Planning for Christmas
That’s right, I used the ‘C Word’ in October – Christmas is coming. The autumn is perfect for getting ahead of the game and stocking up (see what I did there) on essentials and presents before the mad rush that will undoubtedly come. Again though, assuming that the Covid situation is still as it is in December, obviously Christmas could be a lonelier affair. Therefore, this year I want to really start early to make it a special day regardless of circumstances.
I hope that you enjoyed reading this list of my top ten things to do in the autumn. After summer, I think that a pick-mu-up is needed to make you feel a bit better thinking about what is to come. After I wrote this, I actually started to be a bit more positive about the changing Season. Summer may be over for another year, but Autumn and Winter can be just as magical if done right!
Until the next time,
Love Victoria x
