At the beginning of October I spent a wonderful weekend in London. It was exactly what I needed after six stressful weeks of teacher-ship! The main purpose of the trip was to indulge in a spot of culture in the West End. We had booked in to watch the Lion King, one of my favourites. However, we obviously needed accommodation and we decided to treat ourselves by staying at the Waldorf Hilton . I really liked this hotel and I want to tell you all about it.
Staying at the Waldorf Hilton, London
Location
Located along Aldwych, the Waldorf Hilton is one of the West End’s most iconic and famous hotels. Opened in 1908, the 298 bedroom hotel evokes Edwardian tradition. It has also been providing its guests with excellent service and extra sophistication for over a century. The hotel’s stylish interior transports its guests back in time to the glitz and glamour of the 1920s.
For any theatre goers, the hotel is in an ideal location. It is just a stone’s throw from Theatre Land – the Lyceum Theatre (for the Lion King) is just a few minutes’ walk away. The hotel is close to the city, as well as the shops, bars, theatres and restaurants of the West End. If you are looking for leisure or business, I think that the hotel is in an ideal, almost quiet location.
The Room
I was immediately impressed at how spacious our room was, especially for London! It had all the modern amenities that you would expect from a world-renowned hotel. We had a large flat-screen television, tea and coffee making facilities and free WiFi. Most impressively though, it also maintained an air of Edwardian grandeur.
By our large window was a very inviting seating area with a comfortable looking armchair and small table. Here, an extra special touch was the lovely surprise waiting for us. We were treated to two slices of delicious chocolate cake, and a chilled bottle of Monopole champagne. It added to the glitz and glamour and was an incredibly generous gesture. It was evident that a lot of effort had been gone to make the room lovely. Staying at the Waldorf Hilton was certainly reaching expectations.
Following my usual self-tour of the room, I decided to flop onto the generous (and extremely comfy) Queen-sized bed.
The gorgeous marble bathroom was equally as nice, with a rain shower and a bath being within the room. We were also supplied with a range of high quality bathroom products including toiletries from the Temple Spa range. The shower gel was also potentially the nicest smelling thing in the world!
Food
Before our show, we decided to head down to the Hotel’s restaurant, Homage, for dinner. On arrival, we met our friendly, attentive waiter who then led to our table.
The restaurant was so beautiful, with high ceilings, glistening chandeliers and in true keeping with the rest of hotel. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and it was surprisingly quiet. We did have to go early to catch Simba and friends at the theatre, so that probably explains it. Our table was tucked out of the way and provided an intimate dining experience. It all added-up for a sense of luxury and exclusiveness. Top marks thus far.
I was rally impressed with the variety of options on the set menu. From pheasant and duck, to steak or fish, there was something for everyone. I opted for the parsnip soup for starters followed by the confit duck leg (one of my favourites!).
To begin with, we had a selection of freshly baked breads with a sweet and tangy balsamic dip. To go alongside it, we just had to try the hotel’s selection of cocktails.
Shortly after we had demolished the breads, our starters arrived. My parsnip soup was lovely and satisfying; just what you need to warm up on a cold autumnal evening. I then devoured the confit duck leg which was served on a base of braised Borlotti beans, served with a crispy damson sauce. The food was simply divine and presented perfectly. I was expecting the portion sizes to be smaller given the reputation of fine dining. Actually, it was exactly the right amount. With time of the essence, I had to leave before dessert. However, they all looked incredible and, if the chocolate cake in our room is anything to go by, the taste would be just as good.
Both my boyfriend and I would highly recommend having dinner at the Waldorf. You will not be disappointed!
The Verdict
Staying at the Waldorf Hilton was an incredible experience. First, you are right in the heart of London, even if you don’t realise it on the road. In short, I would highly recommend staying at the Waldorf. Whether you are heading to see a show, there for business, or if you just fancy treating yourself to a luxurious five star experience, the hotel is an ideal choice.
The Waldorf Hotel is one of the best and most charming UK hotels I’ve had the pleasure of staying in and I can’t wait to plan a return visit in the not too distant future!
Perfect for: romantic and luxury city/ theatre breaks
