Cologne is an incredible European city with a perfect blend of history, modern culture and artistic flair. It is a perfect day trip from nearby cities or a base to explore the Rhine Valley. However, as with all places in Germany, many of the shops and attractions close all around the city on Sundays. If you are in Cologne on a Sunday and are wondering what to do, then this little post is for you. Enjoy!
What to Do on a Sunday in Cologne | Your Quick Guide
Start with Breakfast by the Rhine
Any day in Germany always starts with a top-tier breakfast. On a Sunday, you’ll actually find that many of the cafés are still open for business. My favourite place to eat in the city is along the riverside at Rheinauhafen. There are plenty of trendy eateries here with a lovely backdrop of the Rhine River. It is the perfect way to begin a day exploring.
Explore Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom)
Cologne Cathedral is the most iconic building in the city, and on of the most famous in Germany. This UNESCO World Heritage site is best seen early morning on a Sunday, where there are fewer crowds, but does not open until 13:00pm on Sundays. Obviously, services run and you can either join in to get in early or wait until after midday. The tower will also be open and you can climb the 533 steps up to get great views of the city.
Stroll Through the Old Town (Altstadt)
The Old Town of Cologne is a must-see and, though nothing will be open, the cobblestone streets alone are some of the most picturesque in Germany. One place in particular to visit is the Heinzelmännchen Fountain, which tells the tale of Cologne’s legendary house-gnomes.
Visit a Museum
Museums are open on a Sunday in Cologne, and are one of the best things to do. If you are an art enthusiast, head to Museum Ludwig, with some impressive collections of modern art including Picasso. Another fantastic option is the Roman-Germanic Museum which is the ultimate destination for lovers of Roman History. Lastly there is another interesting – and incredibly exciting – option; the Chocolate Museum! And yes, free samples are of course included.
Spend Time at Cologne Zoo
A family-friendly option for your Sunday is a visit to Cologne Zoo, one of the oldest and most renowned zoos in Germany. It is home to over 10,000 animals and the zoo features some beautiful exhibits, including a rainforest. There is also the elephant park and the exciting big cat enclosure. Once you have seen as much as you can, you can then take some time to relax in their beautiful landscaped gardens.
Have Lunch and Try Kölsch
For lunch in Germany, I would always recommend a brewery as any regular reader will know! Not only can you have some delicious food and Kölsch, the signature beer of Cologne, but you can also get to know the local culture. Trust me – if your only day in Cologne is a Sunday and you are lost of what to do, make sure that this is up on your list. Some good options are Brauhaus Sion or Früh am Dom.
Walk Along the Rhine Promenade
On sunny Sundays, locals flock to the Rhine Promenade, where you can enjoy the river views. If you don’t fancy a walk or a sit by the river, rent a bike and explore the many riverside paths.
Visit the Botanical Garden (Flora Köln)
The Botanical Garden (Flora Köln) is filled with exotic plants and beautifully-decorated flower beds. You can spend hours exploring here on a sunny day and it is ideal for relaxing on a bench with a good book.
Enjoy a Sweet Treat at Café Reichard
If you are in the mood for something sweet in the afternoon, I would recommend Café Reichard, which you’ll find by the Cathedral. A favourite German past time translates to coffee and cake and once you see the variety of treat here you’ll properly understand why!
Discover the Belgian Quarter
The trendy Belgian Quarter is a neighbourhood filled with some of the best street art in the city. If you are interested in urban and art photography, this is the perfect place for it. I also think that you get a real understanding of the city’s creative vibe.
End the Day with a Rhine Cruise
Wrap up your Sunday with a relaxing Rhine River cruise. Several operators offer these evening cruises and you’ll really appreciate the skyline and city lights the most here. I love sitting back on these cruises with a glass of local wine; perfect any time, any day.
