When Jack and I got married, I dare say that we were more excited about the honeymoon. We saw it as a chance to see somewhere new and to travel somewhere that we wouldn’t usually go to. Where to go on a honeymoon is one of the biggest decisions of your life. To help you out, I’ve compiled my top list of place to go on a honeymoon. I’ve focussed on places outside of Europe for now, but stay tuned for another post dedicated to mini-moons.
Where to Go on a Honeymoon | My Ultimate List
Sri Lanka & The Maldives
Sri Lanka has always appealed to me. I love the idea of visiting the richly decorated temples in Colombo or hiking up to Sigiriya. I imagine going on a secret safari to see elusive leopards or crashing elephants, then returning to the lodge with a cocktail. It almost seems as if there is something for everyone in Sri Lanka.
As well as this, the Maldives have become possibly the travel destination for honeymooners. That being said, I have never been one for clichés or anything of the sort, which to be honest does put me off the Maldives ever so slightly for a honeymoon destination. However, there is something lovely about spending a few days here after exploring the busy Sri Lanka. I would also say that, compare to other places on this list, this option is one of the cheapest.
Malaysia & Borneo
Borneo is on both of our bucket lists. It looks sensational and gives off a completely unique vibe. As we are both nature lovers and we dream of seeing orang-utan in the wild on a boat cruise. Then, in the afternoon, we could go to the turtle sanctuary or take a diving trip into the Indian Ocean.
As well as Borneo, I have always wanted to explore the mainland of Malyasia. One place that has always intrigued me is the Cameron Highlands, an area filled with tea plantations and breath-taking scenery. Naturally, Kuala Lumpur is also high on my list of places to visit in Malaysia, and I’d particular like to take a trip out to visit the Batu Caves.
This trip would need around 3 weeks to do it properly and Borneo is surprisingly expensive. If you did mainland Malaysia, it would come in at a much smaller number.
South Africa
South Africa is up there at the top in terms of a dream honeymoon destination for me. The thought of trekking along Boulders Beach being surrounded by the penguins, or taking a hot air balloon over the savannah, surely has to be a dream for any travel lover.
One bucket list experience for me is to drive along the Garden Route and see the famous vineyards of the cape. Whilst you’re there, of course, you’d need to sample the wine. From here you could go to a Safari lodge in search of the Big 5 across the savannahs. This is famously the ultimate nature experience and it would be super romantic.
If I was feeling a bit cheeky, I would also maybe tie in a little stopover in the Seychelles to compliment this trip. I mean, after a week or so of heavy exploring it’s the least I could do!
Costa Rica
In 2024, we spent two weeks in Costa Rica. Not for our honeymoon, but for a well-deserved break and immersion in nature. What we had was easily one of the best trips we have ever taken.
We saw all of the iconic animals; sloths, toucans, caiman, macaws… The only thing missing was the elusive jaguar. This was mostly done on treks, but we also were lucky enough to go on a boat tour through the canals of Tortuguero. We also spotted turtles laying their eggs.
As well as wildlife, we spent some time relaxing in hot tubs in the cloud forests of Monteverde and drinking cocktails in the heat of the Pacific coast. It was truly an amazing holiday that, with hindsight, would have made for an incredible honeymoon.
Peru
At first glance, Peru may seem like a strange honeymoon destination. But hear me out. Firstly, the Capital Lima has glowing reviews from many travellers. Many of them have been impressed at the rich history of the city as well as its culture.
Perhaps the main magnet for Peru is Machu Picchu; an ancient city within the clouds. The Inca Trail is well and truly on my bucket list and is a contender for this years’ trip. There is just something completely unique about it and you get to see one of the most incredible sights in the world.
Lastly, any trip in South America will completely push you out of your comfort zone. It will promise a wild and unpredictable honeymoon filled with adventure.
Australia
Last but not least, Australia simply has to be on the honeymoon list, especially to the British. I see it as a completely different world – it literally is as far away as you can physically get from home Yes, there may be a lot of spiders and other animals which are there simply to kill you. However, form my experience in other tropical countries filled with them, they just aren’t bothered by you. In fact, if our guides hadn’t pointed them out in Thailand or Costa Rica, we would never have seen a spider or snake.
The main issue for Australia is timing, and associated cost. You’ll need at least 3 weeks there if you want to see everything, which costs a fair amount. However, it has the potential to be incredible.
Final Thoughts | Where to Go on a Honeymoon
These are my finalists, so I am sure that I have missed out a few obvious places! Planning your honeymoon is one of the best experiences there is. My last tip would be go with a reputable travel company and make sure that you milk all the perks! If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. I would love to hear from you.
My Travel Tips and Recommendations
Flights
My usual go-to for booking flights is Skyscanner, the flight search engine. What I love about Skycanner is that you have various options depending on your situation. If you know where you want to go it’s easy – all you need is to search for your destination and dates, and you are provided with all flight options to choose from. If you haven’t decided on your next trip yet, you can use the Everywhere tool for inspiration and to find the cheapest places to fly to.
Accommodation
Whenever I plan my travels Booking.com is my best friend. The website is super easy to use and provides a whole range of accommodation from fancy resorts to budget hotels. Jack and I also regularly use Airbnb – in particular, for staycations in the UK.
Things I can’t travel without
As a travel blogger and keen photographer I never travel without my trusty technology. Always packed are my
- Canon EOS M3
- GoPro Hero5 Black
- I’m also saving for a DJI Mavic Pro
Travel Insurance
It is so important to be prepared for all possibilities when travelling and you simply shouldn’t travel without insurance. When looking for cover I would personally recommend World Nomads or the Post Office – both are affordable and certainly won’t break the bank.
