As Winter draws on, everyone in the UK starts craving a holiday for some much-needed sun. The problem is deciding where to go, and for how long. Luckily, there are plenty of winter sun destinations out there, and I’ve compiled my ultimate top 10. If you’re looking to escape the cold, then this list is for you. Enjoy.
1. Canary Islands, Spain
The Canaries are some of the best winter sun destinations around, with temperatures remaining relatively warm all year. They are also some of the closest to the UK on this list, and cheapest too. There are plenty of islands to choose from, but the warmest (and my favourite) has to be Fuerteventura. Temperatures here usually reach around 20°C in peak winter, but can rise higher than this. I have explored this island extensively, and can assure you that there is plenty to do. Check out my itinerary for one week in Fuerteventura to help you get started.
2. Malta
Malta is a country often overlooked for winter sun. Sure, it may not get too warm in the winter, with temperatures staying around 15°C to 18°C, however there is plenty to see. It is perfect for people who want to do some exploring, but without the extreme heat of other places on this list. Again, it is also relatively cheap and close to the UK, making it ideal for a last-minute trip or a holiday on a budget.
3. The Caribbean Islands
Did you know that the best time to visit the Caribbean is actually January and February? Temperatures soar up to around 29°C frequently, and the weather is usually dry. It makes for a perfect retreat during the darkest months and is ideal for those who just want to lounge about, or try out some water sports. Whilst these islands are more expensive than the Canaries, the temperature is warmer and there are frequently deals through many travel companies.
4. Dubai, UAE
Dubai is an ideal place for some winter sun. The temperatures here range between 20°C to 26°C and there usually is pristine weather. The best part about Dubai is that you can make of it what you want. You can just chill by the pool, you could go exploring key sights like the Burj Khalifa, or try your hand at water sports. If you are tempted by this option, check out my itinerary for 24 hours in Dubai.
5. Thailand
Thailand has to be one of my favourite countries. There is just so much to see and do, whether you are after culture or beaches. Winter is a prime time to see this gorgeous country and all that it has to offer. You can walk through the temples of Chiang Mai, or take a trip to James Bond Island. Whatever you choose to do, Thailand promises adventure and temperatures of over 30°C. If you are interested, check out my itinerary for 10 days in Thailand. .
6. Mexico’s Pacific Coast
If you are after pristine beaches and total relaxation, whilst also having the option for adventure, Mexico could be for you. The Pacific coast is relatively warm this time of year (30°C is common) and you’ll be able to relax by the pool or beach, cocktail in hand. Alternatively, you could go exploring through the nearby jungles, looking at ancient temples and caves.
7. Mauritius
Mauritius is an ideal destination between December and February, and is a perfect winter sun destination. The climate is warm and each day usually reaches 30°C and above. There is also so much to see here and the island is truly beautiful. You could see the incredible Chamarel Geoark, or look out for pink pigeons on Île aux Aigrettes, just to name a few options. If this sounds perfect, check out my itinerary for one week in Mauritius.
8. Costa Rica
When we went to Costa Rica last year, I genuinely felt like it was one of the best holidays I’d ever been on. The wildlife, the adventure, the food… Everything was perfect. However, we went during July in the middle of the wet season, meaning that we rarely saw the sun, but did manage to time it right to see turtles in Tortuguero. Fortunately, December weather is dry and warm and makes for perfect conditions to take a boat tour in the rainforest, or hike in the Arenal National Park. For more information, check out my comprehensive 2 weeks in Costa Rica itinerary.
9. South Africa
No winter sun destination list would be complete without South Africa. It is perfect for those who want thrills and to see grand wildlife on a large scale. One bucket list itinerary for me is to drive the incredible Garden Route. Temperatures during December through to February can reach a warm 25°C, and the weather is dry in the South. However, whilst it can be warm and offer some amazing landscapes, be prepared for a bit of rain.
10. Australia
Lastly, and arguably the grandest of all on the list, is Australia. December through to February land right in the middle of Australian Summer, meaning that it gets very hot. However, if you are not interested in exploring and want to see a bit of cityscape whilst relaxing in the sun, this could be the perfect time to visit. Plus, there is so much to see here that if you did want to go exploring, you could genuinely spend months here and not get bored.
